    Aloha! My name is Dennis Hurd, and I am the president of Atlantis Adventures Submarines International, Inc., based in Hawaii.

    Until 1983, I was running my own worldwide service company, Offshore Engineering Corp., which operated the small oil-industry subs. Then, in 1985, after experiencing the thrill of undersea exploring with a group of executives, I realized the potential that lied in underwater tourism. So along with a group of investors, I drew plans for Atlantis I. In 1987, Atlantis II followed, and in 1998, we were gaining worldwide media attention with National Geographic and "Good Morning America." Today, we operate a fleet larger than that of many national navies!

Atlantis Adventures debuted in 1985, and is now the most successful tour operator in its kind. Now servicing Grand Cayman, Barbados, St. Thomas, Aruba, Guam, Cozumel, and the Hawaiian islands of Kona, Maui and Oahu, its fleet includes more than a dozen submarines. Atlantis I was built to carry 28 passengers on hour-long trips to tour coral reefs in tropical resort locations -- a way for all people to experience the underwater world, previously a privilege reserved for scuba divers. Atlantis I dove up to 150 feet in air-conditioned comfort, and with no pressure on the passengers. Atlantis III, a much larger, 48-passenger sub, which was launched in 1987 in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands and was the first submarine to be certified by the US Coast Guard. The more recent Atlantis XIV, which operates off Waikiki Beach, Hawaii, accommodates 64 passengers, spans more than 100 feet and is the world's largest passenger submarine.

Atlantis Adventures employs approximately 450 people, operating 11 tourist submarines at 13 locations around the world, taking over 750,000 people on undersea tours. Atlantis Adventures also started the School Children's Program. Classroom work is followed by a dive, which provides children with real exposure to the ocean environment, and an awareness of its fragile nature. Among Atlantis passengers are over 40,000 local school children, whose classes participated in the company's program.
